China Calling Code FAQ
- What is the country calling code for China?
- +86 for mainland China. From abroad, dial your network’s exit code (or +), then 86, then the mainland number with the fixed-line trunk 0 removed where applicable. China’s outbound exit is commonly 00 when digits are required instead of +.
- Is it +86 or 86?
- Same code. +86 is the portable form for contacts and mobiles; 86 is what follows an origin exit prefix (for example 011 86… from the US).
- Do I drop the leading 0?
- Yes for mainland fixed-line area codes after +86 (domestic 010… → +86 10…). No for mobiles — keep the full eleven-digit 1XX… after +86. Do not store +86 010….
- How do I dial a China mobile from abroad?
- From 1XX XXXX XXXX, dial or save +86 1XX XXXX XXXX (or exit code + 86 1XX XXXX XXXX). Do not insert a trunk 0 before the mobile.
- Is +86 for Hong Kong or Macao?
- No. Use +852 for Hong Kong and +853 for Macao. Adding +86 to those numbers is a common formatting mistake.

How to Dial China
Saving the number in contacts
Start with +86, then use the reviewed national significant number. Remove the domestic 0 from a fixed-line area code before adding +86. Mobile numbers do not use that fixed-line trunk 0.
Calling from abroad
On a mobile, use the + form. If a network requires digits instead, replace + with that origin network's international prefix. China's own standard exit prefix for outbound calls is 00.
Calling a China mobile

Exceptions and Routing Notes
Common China Formatting Mistakes
- Keeping 0 before a mainland fixed-line area code after +86.
- Adding +86 to a Hong Kong or Macao number.
- Using an international exit prefix as part of the stored number.
Number Portability and Carrier Data
Mobile number portability means a prefix may not identify the current carrier. Treat carrier data as a timestamped lookup result, not a permanent property of the number.
