Mexico Calling Code FAQ
- What is the country calling code for Mexico?
- +52. From abroad, dial your exit code (or +), then 52, then the ten-digit Mexican number. Landlines and mobiles use the same format.
- Do I still add a 1 after +52 for a mobile?
- No. Since 3 August 2019, mobiles are dialled and saved exactly like landlines: +52 followed by ten digits.
- What does the first digit of a Mexican number mean?
- It identifies one of eight numbering areas, numbered 2 to 9; 5, for example, is the Central area. It does not show whether the line is a mobile or a landline, so you can’t tell the two apart from the first digits.
- How do I fix an old Mexican contact?
- Remove any 01, 044 or 045 at the front and any 1 straight after +52. What remains should be +52 followed by ten digits. If it isn’t, the number is incomplete, so check it with its owner rather than guessing.
- What exit code do I use to call abroad from Mexico?
- 00, then the country code and number, for example 00 1 XXX XXX XXXX for a US number. On a mobile, + does the same job.
How to Dial Mexico
Saving the number in contacts
Start with +52, then use the reviewed national significant number. There is no domestic trunk prefix. Keep all ten digits after +52, and do not add 1, 01, 044 or 045.
Calling from abroad
On a mobile, use the + form. If a network requires digits instead, replace + with that origin network's international prefix. Mexico's own standard exit prefix for outbound calls is 00.
Calling a Mexico mobile
Add +52 before the ten digits; do not insert a 1 after +52.

- International display

Calling a Mexico landline
Add +52 before the ten digits; remove nothing.

- XX XXXX XXXX
- International display
- +52 XX XXXX XXXX
- +52Country code: Mexico
- XX XXXX XXXXFixed-line number: Ten-digit placeholder pattern
Calling Mexico from the US, UK or Spain
- From the US:
011 52 XX XXXX XXXX. - From the UK or Spain: both use 00, so it is
00 52 XX XXXX XXXX. - From any mobile:
+52 XX XXXX XXXX.
One pattern covers landlines and mobiles, so there is no separate mobile string. Count ten digits after 52.
Exceptions and Routing Notes
Common Mexico Formatting Mistakes
- Inserting a 1 after +52 for a mobile number.
- Dialling 01, 044 or 045 before a Mexican number.
- Trying to tell a mobile from a landline by its first digits.
Number Portability and Carrier Data
Mobile number portability means a prefix may not identify the current carrier. Treat carrier data as a timestamped lookup result, not a permanent property of the number.
