Malaysia Calling Code FAQ
- What is the country calling code for Malaysia?
- +60. From abroad, dial your exit code (or +), then 60, then the Malaysian number without its leading 0.
- Why does a Malaysian mobile keep the 1 after +60?
- Because only the 0 is the domestic access code. Mobile prefixes are 01X at home, and the 1X part belongs to the number, so 01X XXX XXXX becomes +60 1X XXX XXXX. Removing the 1 as well leaves the number incomplete.
- How long is a Malaysian number after +60?
- Mobiles have nine or ten digits after +60: 1X plus seven or eight subscriber digits, as in +60 1X XXX XXXX or +60 1X XXXX XXXX. Landlines have eight or nine.
- What exit code do I use to call abroad from Malaysia?
- 00. Dial 00, the country code and the number, for example 00 1 XXX XXX XXXX for a US number, or use + on a mobile. Carrier-selection codes in the 18YXX format go before the country code and are never part of a saved number.
How to Dial Malaysia
Saving the number in contacts
Start with +60, then use the reviewed national significant number. Remove the leading domestic 0 before adding +60. Keep the 1 at the start of a mobile prefix.
Calling from abroad
On a mobile, use the + form. If a network requires digits instead, replace + with that origin network's international prefix. Malaysia's own standard exit prefix for outbound calls is 00.

Exceptions and Routing Notes
Common Malaysia Formatting Mistakes
- Keeping the leading 0 after +60.
- Dropping the 1 from a mobile prefix along with the 0.
- Rejecting a valid mobile number because it is one digit longer or shorter than another.
Number Portability and Carrier Data
Mobile number portability means a prefix may not identify the current carrier. Treat carrier data as a timestamped lookup result, not a permanent property of the number.
