Formula

From the UK: 00 (or +) → 39 → Italian number as written (keep the landline 0; mobiles start with 3).

TypeDomestic in ItalySave as (portable)Dial from UK
Landline (Rome)06 XXXXXXXX+39 06 XXXXXXXX00 39 06 XXXXXXXX
Mobile3XX XXXXXXX+39 3XX XXXXXXX00 39 3XX XXXXXXX

X characters are placeholders, not a private callable number. Save +39 in contacts; use 00 only for all-digit UK access. Italy is the exception to the drop-the-zero habit UK callers know from +44.

Dial it step by step

  1. 1

Exit the UK network. On a mobile or modern contact book, start with +. On a UK landline, PBX, or digit-only service, dial 00.

  2. 2

Add the Italy country calling code: 39.

  3. 3

Add the national significant number (NSN). Dial the Italian number as written. Keep the leading 0 on landlines (06 stays 06 after +39). Mobiles start with 3; do not add a 0.

Portable contact format: + 39 + NSN (landline NSN includes the leading 0)

Digits-only call from UK: 00 + 39 + NSN

Mobile and landline rules

  • Geographic landline: Rome 06… becomes +39 06…. The 0 stays.
  • Mobile: 3XX… becomes +39 3XX…. No 0 is added or removed.
  • Why: Italy has no domestic trunk prefix. The 0 at the start of a landline number is part of the area code itself.

See the Italy calling-code reference and the international dialing format guide.

Worked examples

Domestic → portable international → digits-only from United Kingdom. All subscriber digits shown as X are placeholders.

TypeDomestic in ItalySave as (portable)Dial from UK
Rome landline06 XXXXXXXX+39 06 XXXXXXXX00 39 06 XXXXXXXX
Milan landline02 XXXXXXXX+39 02 XXXXXXXX00 39 02 XXXXXXXX

Florence landline055 XXXXXXX+39 055 XXXXXXX00 39 055 XXXXXXX
Italy mobile3XX XXXXXXX+39 3XX XXXXXXX00 39 3XX XXXXXXX

Common mistakes on this route

  • Removing the 0 from an Italian landline out of UK habit. Wrong: +39 6… for Rome. Correct: +39 06… / 00 39 06….
  • Adding a 0 in front of a mobile. Mobiles stay +39 3XX…, not +39 03XX….
  • Saving 00 in the contact. Store +39 + NSN so the number works from any country. See common formatting errors.

Time difference (practical)

Italy uses CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) in summer, so it is one hour ahead of the UK all year. Both switch clocks on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October at the same moment (01:00 UTC), so the gap does not change. Example: 09:00 London = 10:00 Rome.

How the international format is built

Under ITU-T E.164, the international number is the country code plus national significant number, with a maximum of 15 digits. The + symbol and spacing are access/display notation rather than E.164 digits.

Portable

+ 39 + NSN (landline NSN includes the leading 0)

Digits-only from UK

00 + 39 + NSN

FAQ

What is the Italy country code from the UK?

39. Dial 00 or +, then 39, then the Italian number, keeping the leading 0 on landlines.

Do I dial 00 or +?

Use + on a mobile or saved contact when supported. Use 00 on a UK landline or digit-only path. After that, the destination is the same: 39 + NSN.

Do I drop the zero for Italy?

No, not for landlines. After +39, keep the 0 (06 → +39 06…). Mobiles start with 3 and have no 0 to add or drop.

Why is Italy different from the UK?

UK numbers drop their domestic trunk 0 after +44. Italy has no trunk prefix: the 0 is part of the landline area code, so it stays after +39.

How do I dial an Italian mobile from the UK?

Dial 00 39 3XX XXXXXXX or save +39 3XX XXXXXXX. Do not add a 0.
