United Kingdom Calling Code FAQ

What is the country calling code for the United Kingdom?
+44. From abroad, dial your network’s exit code (or +), then 44, then the UK number with the leading 0 removed.
Is it +44 or 44?
Same code. +44 is the portable form for contacts and mobiles; 44 is what follows an origin exit prefix (for example 011 44… from the US). UK outbound exit is commonly 00 when digits are required instead of +.
Do I drop the leading 0?
Yes for UK numbers after +44. Domestic 020… → +44 20…; domestic 07… → +44 7…. Do not store +44 (0)… or +44 020….
How do I dial a UK mobile from abroad?
From 07700 900XXX, drop the first 0, then dial or save +44 7700 900XXX (or exit code + 44 7700 900XXX).
Is +44 the same as GB? What about 070 numbers?
+44 is the ITU calling code; GB / GBR are ISO country codes — not what you dial. Treat 070 personal numbers as their own range, not ordinary mobiles.

How to Dial United Kingdom

Saving the number in contacts

Start with +44, then use the reviewed national significant number. Remove the national prefix 0 before adding +44. The 0 is not part of the national significant number in international format.

Calling from abroad

On a mobile, use the + form. If a network requires digits instead, replace + with that origin network's international prefix. United Kingdom's own standard exit prefix for outbound calls is 00.

Trunk prefix 0 is dropped when dialing internationally.

Calling a United Kingdom mobile

Remove the first 0 from 07700, then add +44.

Exceptions and Routing Notes

Common United Kingdom Formatting Mistakes

  • Keeping the domestic 0 and producing +44 020… instead of +44 20…
  • Dialling 00 44 and also retaining the plus sign.
  • Treating 070 personal numbers as ordinary mobile numbers.

Number Portability and Carrier Data

Mobile number portability means a prefix may not identify the current carrier. Treat carrier data as a timestamped lookup result, not a permanent property of the number.
